Many Not for Profit Organizations across the United States rely on holding special events and fundraisers to increase funds and donations for their nonprofit organization. Great detail and planning is needed to properly and successfully hold one of these nonprofit special events. Here are a few tips to help your nonprofit organization get started on safely planning your next event or fundraiser.

  1. Appoint a Special Board to organize and fun the fundraiser

    Each board member should be given one of the following responsibilities:

    • Marketing/Public Relations
    • Safety & Risk Management
    • Donations
    • Schedule or Agenda of Events
  2. Create and Establish Goals
    • What does your nonprofit wish to accomplish from this fundraiser?
    • What will it take to meet this goal?
    • How much money? How many attendees?
  3. Identify a list of potential attendees and donors
    • Identify the number of attendees needed to meet your goal above
    • Make a list of all potential donors
    • Make sure this list is greater than the number of guests you need to attended
  4. Establish a timeline

    Your timeline should be the path to meeting your fundraising goal. Make sure you include dates that each of the following need to be completed by:

    • Guest list
    • Venue
    • Menu
    • Entertainment
    • Raffles, door prizes, auction items, giveaways
    • Invitations mailed
    • Follow up on invitations (volunteers should call all guests that have not yet responded)
  5. Promote and Invite!

    The key to a successful event is making sure your community is aware and having great attendance. Marketing and promoting a special event for your nonprofit is the best way to accomplish this.

    • Contact local radio stations
    • Send press releases to local news stations
    • Send invitations and flyers
    • Put an ad in your nonprofit newsletter
    • Set up a telethon

Following these steps and guidelines will help to jumpstart planning a successful nonprofit fundraiser. Prior to the day of the event it is also important to contact your insurance agency and verify that special events are covered by your liability insurance policy.
